Dear Family, 

During Module 2, students will explore the sun, moon, and stars, and their impact on storytelling. They will engage with narrative stories and discuss why authors write about the sun, moon, and stars. They will also study sky patterns through informational texts and create narrative poems based on their observations of the sun and moon.  

Learning Focus: 

  • The sun, moon, and stars affect our lives and inspire imagination. 

  • The sun and moon appear in different places in the sky at different times. 

  • The pattern of motion of objects in the sky can be described and predicted. 

  • Writers use their observations of the sun and moon to write narrative poems. 

Reading and Writing Skills: 

  • Retelling stories and understanding their central message. 

  • Describing characters, settings, and major events. 

  • Identifying sensory words. 

  • Using adjectives and prepositions. 

  • Following discussion rules and building on others’ comments. 

  • Writing narrative poems with sequenced events and details.

  • Listening to read-alouds about the sun, moon, and stars. 

  • Observing and discussing pictures of the sun, moon, and stars. 

  • Singing songs and engaging in movement routines. 

  • Role-playing and retelling stories. 

  • Writing and drawing responses. 

  • Participating in Science Talks and hands-on activities. 

Supporting Learning at Home: 

  • Discuss why authors write about the sun, moon, and stars. 

  • Read books and sing songs about the sun, moon, and stars. 

  • Observe and discuss the sun, moon, and stars at different times. 

  • Encourage nightly reading of the Decodable Student Reader or a letter book. 

  • Discuss patterns observed in the sky. 

  • Talk about how writers use observations to write stories.
