EL Education Resources - 2nd Grade

Dear Family, 

During Module 2, your student will study fossils through narratives about paleontologists and learn about narrative structure. They will read informational texts to understand fossil formation and write a narrative about discovering a fossil. 

Learning Focus: 

  • Paleontologists study fossils. 

  • Fossilization helps us understand Earth’s history. 

  • Informational texts provide detailed knowledge. 

  • Characters in narratives overcome challenges.  

  • Writing narratives about fossil discoveries. 

Reading Skills: 

  • Vowel teams: oi, oy, ou, ow 

  • Long u sound patterns: oo, ou, ui, ue, ew 

  • Contractions (e.g., won’t, can’t) 

  • Words with -old, -ost, -ind, -ild, -tion, and -sion 

  • Doubling consonants with suffixes (e.g., running) 

  • Reading -ed endings in different ways

  • Listening to read-alouds 

  • Viewing and describing fossil photos 

  • Retelling narratives 

  • Creating a “Curiosities Museum” 

  • Watching videos about fossils 

  • Reading and writing about paleontologists 

  • Observing and making inferences about fossils

  • Writing narratives with teacher guidance
