Module 2: Adaptations and the Wide World of Frogs

Dear Family,

During Module 2, Students will focus on the big ideas:

  • Frogs have unique adaptations that help them to survive in various environments.

  • An effective narrative has a beginning that establishes the character and situation, a middle that introduces a problem with character response, and an ending that resolves the problem.

Expert Knowledge:

  • Experts build knowledge by reading, viewing, and listening to gather and organize information from a variety of sources.

  • Experts share information through writing and speaking.

Learning Activities:

  • Unit 1: Students read and write narratives about frogs, analyze plot structures, and create pourquoi tales answering “why” questions about frogs.

  • Unit 2: Students build knowledge about frogs, read complex texts, and write informational paragraphs.

  • Unit 3: Students write an informative essay about a “freaky” frog, create a trading card, and compile their work into a book.

Language Skills:

  • Comparative and Superlative Adjectives and Adverbs: Form and use these in writing. (Ex. Adjective: taller, tallest; Adverb: more quickly, most quickly)

  • Verb Tense: Understand and use regular and irregular verbs in past, present, and future tenses. (Ex. Regular: walk-walked-walks-will walk; Irregular: go-went-goes-will go)

  • Sentence Structure: Use simple, compound, and complex sentences. (Ex. Simple: The Cat Sleeps.; Compound: The cat sleeps, and the dog barks.; Complex: The cat sleeps when the house is quiet.)

Supporting Learning at Home:

  • Read books and watch documentaries about frogs.

  • Talk to your child about the frogs he or she is studying and what makes them unique.

  • Talk to your child about the chosen freaky frog and its unique adaptations.

  • Encourage your child to explain their informative texts and narrative structures.

  • Practice using comparative adjectives, adverbs, and verb tenses in conversation.

Sincerely,

Third Grade Teachers
