EL Education Resources - Kindergarten

Dear Family,

During Module 2, your student will study weather. They will learn about the components that make weather, weather in stories, and write a story about an imaginary character experiencing weather.

Learning Focus:

  • Sun, wind, and clouds create weather.

  • Weather patterns can be measured and predicted.

  • Weather affects clothing, plans, and feelings.

  • Writers use words and pictures to tell stories.

Reading Foundation Skills:

  • Identifying letters, rhyming words, and syllables.

  • Naming the onset and rhyme of words.

Activities:

  • Listening to read-alouds about weather and identifying characters, settings, and events.

  • Singing weather songs and performing “weather cheers.”

  • Observing weather outside, in pictures, and videos.

  • Writing and drawing about weather and preparation.

  • Sharing daily weather reports.

  • Listening to “The Snowy Day” by Ezra Jack Keats.

  • Creating puppets and using oral storytelling.

  • Making high-quality illustrations.

  • Writing words, phrases, and sentences for their story.

Supporting Learning at Home:

  • Discuss daily weather: “What makes weather? What is today’s weather? What to wear? What activities are good for today’s weather?”

  • Read books and sing songs about weather.

  • Observe and record daily weather with pictures and words.

  • Practice identifying letters and their sounds.

  • Look for high-frequency words: “he,” “on,” “and,” “up,” “a,” “you,” “see.”

  • Contact family in different locations to compare weather.

  • Share weather-related memories as stories.

  • Discuss your student’s weather narrative: What’s the weather? Who’s the character? What do they wear and do?

  • Identify weather types and choose appropriate clothing and activities.

Sincerely,

Kindergarten Teachers
